Gillie Nicholls and South Staffordshire & Shropshire Healthcare would like to welcome anyone living with a dementia (as well as their carers) to join in our “Sing a Long” at the Bridgtown Community Centre in Cannock. You can join us whether this be by singing along or by playing percussion instruments. The songs chosen are generally those that would be memorable to the members; they have been suggested by our professional musician or the group members themselves – all songs are included in lyric books so that all can follow and be sure of the words. Those attending represent various types of dementia as well as different stages and we try to support all members to be involved and enjoy the session! Those with dementia and their carers usually sit next to each other and we sit in a circular formation.
The group has a basic structure where we will firstly welcome all members, do some basic breathing exercises and then sing from the lyric books but we try to maintain a relaxed atmosphere throughout and let the group lead the structure. There is always a mid-point break to give people chance to socialise and have a cup of tea with cake!
